Start 2020 Right with a Fresh Coat of Living Room Paint

You may have seen it on one of those do-it-yourself home shows or perhaps have done it yourself at one time or another. In any event, adding a fresh coat of paint to a home or property is a very common way to make a space feel brand new.

The living room is one area where we spend the majority of our time. It is a place to gather to watch television, spend time with family and friends, or just hang out. After enough time, that living space can start to feel a little outdated.

So, what better way to brighten up the area than with a new coat of paint? Here are a few tips that will get you going on the right path toward changing things up in the living room and applying a whole new coat to your living room walls.

Have a Plan

Don’t just walk into your living area with a paintbrush and paint can. Having a plan of attack can make things run more smoothly and ensure that you get the look that you are after. Plus, planning ahead allows you to prepare for anything that might go wrong.

This means planning the supplies that you will need – brushes, rollers, rolling tins, edge brushes – and having the color that you want all picked out. The latter can be a process in itself, but it is not all there is to it.

Have as good of an understanding as possible about what your choice will look like with the rest of your motif. Going in blind can mean that the new color doesn’t go with the rest of the room, leaving you feeling dissatisfied with the choice that you’ve made.

Prep the Space

This is where most people run into issues. It is all too common to move furniture to the center of the room. After all, who wants to move big, heavy furniture out of the room only to have to move it right back in?

There’s a reason to do this. When you move the furniture to the center, you just create a narrow space on the edges to work with. This can result in sloppy edgework or not leaving yourself enough room to paint with.

Additionally, you need to make certain that all fixtures are removed and that baseboards are properly protected. Using a drop cloth on the floors is relatively easy, but you have to take the time to properly cover the baseboards. If you don’t, you can see paint get onto those baseboards and leave it looking sloppy.

Once you have properly planned and prepared your room to be painted, all you have to do is paint! That is the easy part comparatively speaking, but you will be glad that you took the necessary steps beforehand to get the room ready.
