This is a tip that everyone can follow and, quite frankly, everyone should. Where other tips may be more or less difficult depending on your resources or degree of familiarity with painting, everyone can throw things out properly. Not littering is one of the first things that they teach you when you’re little, after all.
Even so, we can all take things a step further.
While it may be tempting to pour excess paint down the drain, you’ll want to refrain from doing so given the mess that this can make of both the sewage system and any natural outlets that may receive the runoff. Instead, you’ll want to seal the paint can tightly and include it on your next trip to a waste disposal facility. If there isn’t one near you or you don’t want to bother with that extra step, see what your local trash pickup service can do about that.

Chances are good that you’ve heard the phrase “reduce, reuse, recycle.” Quality paint can stay good for a long time so it’s wasteful economically as well as ecologically to simply throw yours out if there’s a reasonable amount left in the can.

Air out your cans in a well-ventilated area, wash out any leftover latex, and you can toss them out with the rest of the trash.
